I’m not a traditional marketer. I don’t have one key area of expertise, such as search or social, I didn’t study business or marketing in school and I’m not on a set path toward some sort of marketing enlightenment. All in all when it comes to marketing and business, I’m a generalist. My expertise spans from public relations to channel management, I have a philosophy degree and no amount of epistemological thought experiments will tell me what lies ahead for me. Though, like a lot of marketers, I have a knack for seeing the big picture, a deep appreciation for the strategy behind an idea or business, and an innate curiosity for the “why” of things.
After nearly 5 years working in various marketing and communications functions in the banking and financial services industry, I’ve filled my toolbox of expertise with public relations, brand, digital marketing, customer experience, etc… I’ve spent my career up until this point essentially selling an existing product or service created by someone else. To take my career to the next level and realize both personal and professional goals, I’m looking to learn how to turn my innovative ideas into viable products and, subsequently, bring them to life. This is why I’m taking BrainStation’s Product Management course.
Learning how to develop a viable product and bring it to life is just the beginning. As the world propels forward at an alarmingly speedy rate due to an unwavering steady stream of technological advancements impacting virtually every industry, the people, businesses and organizations that succeed are the ones able to adapt to and advance with technology. In today’s fast-paced world it’s critical to adopt technology with open arms and find ways to improve, optimize and grow yourself, your product or your business through technology. This is why I’m learning Product Management at BrainStation rather than a “traditional” educational institution. BrainStation prides itself on being progressive and equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to survive in the digital world we live and work in.
By the end of this course I hope to use the information learned and the skills developed to progress my career and dreams. The knowledge and skillset gained from this course will also help differentiate me from my peers. Learning how to identify market opportunities, develop a viable product, design a business proposal and forecast business results will allow me to advance beyond just the selling of a successful product to the creation of a successful product. By having an understanding of both the selling and creation of products, I’ll be able to better market products and services and communicate to consumers, leading me to ultimately drive better results. Moreover, learning from BrainStation’s experienced and forward-thinking educators will give me an impactful edge in an increasingly competitive world.
Overall, I hope to leave this course an improved thinker and creator.
