My name is Brendan Gamble, and I have decided to enrol in BrainStation’s Intro to Web Development part-time program beginning in January.

Let’s start by explaining where I’m coming from. My employment journey since graduating from King’s University College in 2011 with a BA Major in Economics has been anything but a direct path to a final destination. If you’re anything like most recent (or in my case not so recent) grads, you know the struggle of finding your fit in the workforce. Fortunately for me, my journey has included opportunities to extensively travel overseas and to gain experience working in sales, marketing, and analytics at a variety of different levels for some very cool companies. Currently I work in marketing and promo for a well-known energy drink company.

So what led me to BrainStation’s Intro to Web Development course? The web is growing and the way businesses are using the web is constantly evolving.  Software is consuming the world, and understanding how lines of code create the digital worlds we navigate through everyday is quickly becoming a necessary digital literacy. If you’re like most undergrads feeling limited in your opportunities for job growth, the idea of investing in further education in order to open up your marketability as an employee has crossed your mind at least a few times. Job seekers with a background in web development are a scarce resource with a notable advantage in today’s job market, and so taking BrainStation’s Intro to Web Development course seemed like a no-brainer. This course offers a unique opportunity to learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and a little bit of JavaScript in order to gain a better understanding of the languages our digital worlds are built on. Enrolling was the perfect way for me to invest in my future through gaining a valuable skill set attractive to employers.

Another reason why I chose to take BrainStations intro to Web Development course was the power it gives you to create stuff for almost no starting cost, with the added benefit of having my creative pieces accessible globally. On a personal level, I am always looking for ways to express myself creatively, and learning how to code can be just that. Coding gives us the opportunity to create things for cheap and have it available to anyone with a computer and an Internet connection. It just doesn’t get any more beautiful than that.

I’m looking forward to beginning class. I know that these 10 weeks will be trying but I am excited to face the challenge head on!
