“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin
Just last week, I had submitted my application for graduation with a 4-year degree from Simon Fraser University. I was also lucky enough to have successfully completed 2 years of co-operative work experience as a Business Analyst within more traditional public sector institutions as well as a part of a Marketing team at a dynamic tech startup…naturally, as a member of the Millennial Generation, it won’t surprise you that I felt drawn to the more decentralized working environment of a startup – not to mention the regularly catered food, office pets & unlimited lattes – mhmm good times.
Anyways, the point of all this is that the experience I was able to gain over the years has not only opened up my eyes to Vancouver’s tech scene but it had motivated me to bite the bullet and take a stab at teaching myself all about marketing funnels, digital analytics, social media and lead generation so that I may pursue a career at one of the many budding startups in Vancouver. This, unfortunately, wasn’t as easy as I initially thought due to the overwhelming amount of eBooks, Blog posts and YouTube videos that would bombard me during my solo learning sessions. I think it is important to note that the information that is available online is so incredibly helpful in building context around various concepts but what I found was that without a clear agenda, mentorship and collaboration, it was a challenge to stay focused; working full-time, made that an even greater challenge.
So, you might be asking yourself, in all of this chaos what actually led me here? Well this past summer, I found a very interesting article on Vancity Buzz that introduced BrainStation as an organization that placed much emphasis on collaborative learning, personalized support and experiential growth. All of this is possible through:
- Hands-on learning
- Mentorship by Industry professionals
- Community Support
- Intimate Learning Environment
- Diverse Peer Group
- Flexible Course Schedule
Besides the reasons stated above, it is also very convenient that I was able to enroll in a weekly 10-week course that did not conflict with my work schedule, is nearby transit and will still allow me to have enough time to grab a latte on my way to class (bonus points since it is literally attached to a coffee shop)! Last but not least, my motivation for joining BrainStation is that it is an organization whose values closely align with my own. My personal belief is that learning is established on the connections that students are able to create and share through their peers and mentors and I am excited to finally work with like-minded students and professionals working with BrainStation to learn all about Business Branding, Market Strategy, Social Analytics and Digital Advertising.
With that being said, I encourage everyone to take time out of their days to learn about whatever they are interested in, take time to enjoy the journey, make friends and don’t be so hard on yourself. The answers are all around you and resources are limitless – Stay Curious, Stay Passionate and Stay Motivated.
