Learn how Gracie, a recent university grad, is using BrainStation's part-time UI Design course to help her reach her career goals.
Hi everyone, I’m Lauren.
I am the founder of Fine Line Creative, a digital creative agency that crafts elegant designs and simple strategies to help small businesses grow their brands online. I’m also a freelance designer and writer.
What course are you enrolled in for this cohort?
I’m enrolled in the part-time UI Design course at BrainStation in Toronto.
How did you hear about the program?
I’ve been keeping an eye on the Brainstation website for interesting courses since I finished the digital marketing course in March.
What made you decide to take the course?
Most of what I know about user interface design is self-taught and I’ve always wanted more formal training to reinforce my skills and make my design process more efficient. I had a hard time deciding between the user experience and user interface courses—web design is a large part of my business and they’re both such important aspects of it. In the end, I chose UI because it looked like the course material would be more fun and creative (sorry UX folks–I’m sure you’re having a blast too!)
What are you most excited to learn?
I’m most excited to learn about the latest trends in web and mobile app design.
How do you plan on applying your newfound skills, personally and/or professionally?
I’ve recently started up my own little digital creative agency, so I’m looking forward to using what I’ve learned in this class to design elegant websites and digital experiences that my clients’ customers will love using.
If you had to pick a favourite tech company doing awesome things – who would it be and why?
Irradiated Software, an app developer for Mac OSx is hands down my favourite tech company. I can’t live without their app Sizeup, which lets me move and resize the multiple windows I always have open with simple keyboard shortcuts. It’s a productivity lifesaver.
Favourite spot to spend an afternoon in the city?
Any art supply store. Put me in a DeSerres with a credit card and you won’t see me for hours.
Describe your current hobbies and interests – do you see your course lending to these?
Graphic design and playing around with HTML and CSS are still my favourite hobbies (even though they’re both now part of my job description). I can’t wait to build the site I’ll be designing for the final project.
What will you be accomplishing in 10 weeks? or What will you be capable of in 10 weeks?
Over the next 10 weeks I’ll be applying everything I learn in the course to design a new website for Fine Line creative, with an intuitive, eye-catching user interface.
