Hi there, I’m Kristen.
I’m a donut loving Toronto native that enjoys analyzing brand campaigns while exploring T.O’s ‘cool spots’ (whatever that means). Professionally, I am the communications coordinator for Zaneen, the exclusive distributor of European lights across North America.
What course are you enrolled in for this cohort?
I am currently enrolled in the part-time Digital Marketing course at BrainStation in Toronto.
How did you hear about the program?
Through online research of keyword search, reviews and LinkedIn profiles I located BrainStation. It just so happens that post-research, my brother in law informed me that he knows CEO Jason Field, which automatically credited the brand further!
What made you decide to take the course?
After graduating undergrad in a marketing equivalent program, and deciding to work in radio-sales, my skills in marketing and branding needed refreshing for my recent career change. I found that BrainStation was the only company that offered timely, relevant and substantial course content. Based off of the syllabus I knew I would take more out of this course than certain undergraduate courses I completed.
What are you most excited to learn?
I’m truly looking forward to building a branding campaign from scratch – learning how each social network corresponds with one another in order to build an ultimate online branding platform.
How do you plan on applying your newfound skills, personally and or professionally?
Professionally, I hope to generate a new marketing campaign for my company’s 35 th anniversary: almost like a brand revamp, or marketing push to have the name more recognized across North America. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a few extra Insta followers and LinkedIn interactions!
If you had to pick a favourite tech company doing awesome things – who would it be and why?
I promise this is not a plugin, but BrainStation! I’m beyond fascinated by the determination and true happiness behind the employees to grow this company. My favourite quality of the company is their community presence: hosting events, demonstrating value in networking and one on one interactions. Great things always come when you associate yourself on the same level as the user!
Favourite spot to spend an afternoon in the city?
There are so many great neighbourhoods to choose from… I’m a big fan of walking around Trinity Bellwoods (Park) with my dog. Ossington and Dundas has a ridiculous amount of no name bars, restaurants, and cafes so it’s easy to stumble upon a new favourite spot each week.
What entrepreneur or thought-leader inspired you most and why?
Julian Brass – CEO of notable.ca. Not only did Julian create a content provoking, local and educating website for millennials but he truly believes in a work and play balance. I once saw him speak at a fundraiser for Women’s Brain Health Innovative. It’s Young Persons Cabinet and he said something along the lines of “if you feel the need for a vacation, something needs to change. Vacations and travel should be a want, if it becomes a need then you are exhausting your resources and not truly enjoying what you are doing.”
Describe your current hobbies and interests – do you see your course leading to these?
Travel. Writing. Analyzing. My ideal situation would be to travel every few months for a month at a time, while documenting my journeys and learning about the millions of brands around the world, and how each one has a unique story.
What will you be accomplishing in 10 weeks? Or what will you be capable in 10 weeks?
In 10 weeks I will have the skills to confidently rebrand my family company across North America. No pressure?!
