In September of 2014 I changed my outlook on life and began to challenge myself with a set of new goals. Since I was young, I had always been interested in technology, but the thought of computer programming was something way beyond my comfort zone, as they didn’t offer any courses like that in my high school. After three years of pursuing a different career path that I was not enjoying, I had made the decision that I needed to try it out and see if programming was for me. I am currently enrolled in the Computer Programming Analyst course at Georgian College. The competition in my course is even higher than I had expected and is sometimes discouraging, as the new students three or four years younger than me have the fundamental courses I was lacking in high school. This course started out with a large amount of intimidation, but the challenges I have faced and still continue facing have made me realize that I am on the right path, and I want to be a programmer.
I have decided to enroll in the Intro to iOS Development course at BrainStation to keep myself ahead of the competition. While my fellow classmates and I begin our second co-op term and are all gaining industry experience, I would like to continue broadening my knowledge of different languages. This will be something to put on my resume that will set me aside and additionally give me a chance to learn a new subject in a different environment. I’m confident that BrainStation will be the right choice for me after reading through various positive reviews, blog posts and word of mouth.
Techvibes posted an article that stated “Globally, the average millennial with internet spends more than three hours per day on their mobile devices, the equivalent of nearly a full day each week—or almost 50 days per year”. Reading this was a wakeup call. Mobile application development is and will continue becoming one of the smartest career choices in this day and age. The Intro to iOS Development course will give me a chance to get into a rapidly growing industry, while continuing to challenge myself and develop my confidence as a programmer.
I am excited to share my experiences along this journey. There is a spot for everyone in this industry and as I try to find my place, I continue to realize that you truly have the ability to do anything you have a passion for, you just have to get out there and try.
