You may have heard about how machine learning will impact our lives. The question is, what’s the difference between data science and machine learning?
Whether you’re a full-blown data nerd or someone that avoids numbers at all costs (guilty as charged), there’s no denying it: data skills are increasingly important. In fact, demand for data scientists is projected to rise by 28% in the next two years, with a projected 2.7 million new data jobs.
If that gives you anxiety, we got some good news for you: BrainStation is now accepting applications for the Data Science Full-Time program at our Toronto and Vancouver campuses.

Taught by experienced educators currently working in the field, the 10-week program introduces cutting-edge data concepts and techniques, including:
- Collecting and storing data with Excel, XML and SQL, and more
- Analyzing data using Python programming and relevant packages
- Visualizing data using tools like Tableau and PowerBI
- Data modelling using Python and R
- Presenting findings in a clear and engaging way
- Advanced topics like deep learning with TensorFlow and big data tools such as Hadoop
Put simply, by program’s end, graduates will have the skills, experience, and confidence to dive into a career in data. But don’t just take my word for it; here’s what our Founder and CEO, Jason Field, had to say about the program:
“All industries, from retail to banking, are in the midst of digital transformation, which is creating a huge number of new positions in data science and analysis. To address this skills gap, we worked with our hiring partners (from some of Canada’s largest organizations) to develop a collaborative, hands-on learning environment that mimics what you will experience in the real world,” he said.
What does that real-world experience look like for a Data Scientist? To find out, check out a conversation we had with Colin Fraser, a Data Scientist at CHIMP (Charitable Impact), and a lead Instructor for BrainStation’s part-time Data Science course.
