BrainStation students come from a variety of backgrounds and career paths. To highlight our amazing students and their diverse backgrounds, we’re going to be introducing you to some of them on our blog. Meet Kate MacLennan, who will be joining our Summer Intro to Web Development class in Vancouver. Read on to learn a bit about Kate and why she wants to learn to code. Keep checking back as she updates us on her progress throughout her 12 weeks with BrainStation!
What educational/career path took you to where you are today?
Getting an Honours degree in English Literature led to working in magazines as both a writer and editor for the last 17 years. A couple years ago I accepted a job creating an editorial strategy for lululemon athletica. Brands as publishers is an interruption to the traditional content mediums that I find fascinating. In my spare time I’m still an active freelance writer.
What is the best part of your job?
At lululemon the best part is the navigation and manipulation of the ever-changing digital sphere. As a freelance writer it’s always being able to explore new places and meet new people and tell the stories of both.
Why did you choose to take a BrainStation course?
Working with a colleague I’m launching a media house (truthfully, it’s already been launched, stay tuned to hear more!), and I see success for that project including the ability to communicate effectively around web development.
What is your go-to app these days?
Lately that’d be my Nike+ Running app.
And finally…go-to resto in Vancouver?
I’ve never gone wrong at Miku—Aburi-style sushi using only sustainable seafood. Innovative and delicious.
