Learn more about BrainStation’s User Interface Design course.

What course are you enrolled in for this cohort and what made you decide to take it?

I’m enrolled in the UI design. I decided to take this program to kick start a career in User Experience research and design. UI and UX are two sides of the same coin and I’m looking to gain the skills needed to build solid human-centered interfaces.

How did you hear about the program?

I heard about BrainStation from a friend who went to the SFU SIAT program. He had a TA who also worked as a teacher at BrainStation. He recommended the program as a great way to learn the tools and skills to start designing. My girlfriend saw a Facebook ad around the same time and tagged me in it, and that’s when I knew I had to check it out!

What are you most excited to learn?

I’m most excited to learn best practices from experts in the industry. There are a lot of materials available for free online but often the most valuable education comes from small comments based on the cumulative experience of an industry professional.

If you had to pick a favourite tech company doing awesome things – who would it be and why?

I’m a big fan of Google’s products and services; when they play to their strengths they can nail a user experience. Inbox, Keep, and the Google Calendar are my three most used apps. The Chromecast is unparalleled for value and ease of use, and I’ll only reluctantly use any other laptop than my Chromebook. After troubleshooting Windows and Mac systems at work all day long, it’s refreshing to come home to a laptop that just works.

Favourite spot to spend an afternoon in the city?

I love hiking and would choose to spend the afternoon climbing Seymour.

How do you plan on applying your newfound skills, personally and/or professionally?

Immediately I plan to use my newfound user interface design skills to design the web app I’ve been working on in my spare time. In the future, I plan to build on these skills to start a career in the field and one day, many years down the road, start a consulting firm of my own.
