Ten weeks ago at the beginning of my first Web Development class, we were asked to write down our goals for the next 90 days. Here were mine:

1. Make my website kick ass!
2. Learn how to talk to the developers at work
3. Learn enough to start freelancing
4. Get on the path to becoming an expert in web development
5. Have fun

Fast forward to the final class, and we were all given back our goal sheet to review. And I was thrilled to see that all five were accomplished!

wk10-1

Make my website kick ass!
I’m so unbelievably proud of my final project! Getting to work on a website of my own choosing was invaluable and one of the main reasons why I chose BrainStation. Working on a real life project taught me to try new things, be more creative, and tackle all sorts of challenges.  I can walk away from my the course not only with my head full of coding knowledge, but a gorgeous portfolio website that will help me get more clients.

Learn how to talk to the developers at work
I’ve now got the proper syntax to communicate with the web developers at work. Instead of talking to them in graphic design terms, I can confidently request specific CSS selectors to get the exact look I want. I also got to see how difficult it is to work with an improperly made Photoshop mockup, so I know exactly what to do in the future to provide clear and detailed website designs.

wk10-2

Learn enough to start freelancing
I’ve already started reaching out to people I know who have expressed interest in a new website. Working with people I know will help me get my feet wet in freelance web design by giving me valuable insight on how to give quotes based on the work required, gauge timelines, and adding to my portfolio.

Get on the path to becoming an expert in web development
My education at BrainStation has really opened me up to the world of coding. No longer is it incredibly intimidating, but something fascinating that I can’t wait to learn more about. I won’t stop here – I want to keep building on these valuable foundational skills and eventually make a full-time freelancing career out of it.

wk10-3

Have fun
Definitely! A huge thanks is in order to Steve and Jody for sharing their passion and expertise, thanks to my classmates for the laughs and inspiration, and thanks to BrainStation for bringing us all together to learn and have a great time.

I’m so excited to take my BrainStation skills out into the world and conquer a few more of my goals!

XOXO
